What this document is

A receipt records a payment you have already received. It is issued after the money arrives, and its job is to be the customer’s evidence that they paid you.

It is not a demand for payment and should never be used as one. If the money has not arrived, what you want is an invoice.

When to use it

  • The moment a payment clears, especially for cash and transfers where nothing else proves it.
  • When a customer needs the payment for their own records or an expense claim.
  • Alongside an invoice: the invoice asked, the receipt confirms.

What it has to carry

  • Your registered business name, address, TIN and RC number.
  • Who paid, and what the payment was for — quoting the invoice number it settles.
  • A unique receipt number and the date the payment was received.
  • The payment method: cash, transfer, card, or the payment link used.
  • The amount received, with the VAT element shown where VAT was charged.
